Picture a sealed jar with every last bit of air pumped out — nothing inside at all, and the outside air pressing to get in. Two things follow from that picture. Emptiness pulls: take the air out of a tube and dust rushes in, which is where the cleaning machine gets its name. And emptiness matters: take the leader out of a group and the same kind of hole is left, waiting to be filled.
