1. 1

A dustpan is a flat, open tray with a short handle. You set it on the floor and sweep dust, , and tiny bits of rubbish into it with a brush. People almost always keep the two together and call the pair a dustpan and brush; you buy them as a set, and you would sound a little odd talking about a dustpan with no brush in mind. It is a home-and-cleaning word, not a formal one. The “pan” is not a cooking pan, though it is the same old idea of a wide, shallow container. After you have gathered the dirt, it goes into the bin — the dustpan is only the collector, not the place rubbish lives.

    畚箕(店裡也常寫垃圾鏟;中國大陸較常說簸箕)
