In American English vacation is the ordinary word for a holiday away from work, so vacationer is the natural word for the person taking one. British speakers say holidaymaker instead, and would find vacationer odd. You most often meet it in the plural and at a distance — a news report, a sign, a tourist office describing crowds: "vacationers filled the beaches", "summer vacationers". It is a neutral, slightly formal, outside-looking word. People do not usually call themselves one; you would say "I'm on vacation", not "I am a vacationer". Notice how it differs from nearby words. A tourist is someone visiting a place to see it, and can be a bit negative — tourists get in the way. A traveller suggests someone moving around, maybe for a long time.
