Against the constitution — the top set of rules that a country, or sometimes a club, company or student union, is run by. If a court says a law is unconstitutional, that law is dead: it breaks the highest rule, so it cannot stand, no matter how many people voted for it. This is a serious, formal word, mostly heard in news and courtrooms.

Against違反 the constitution憲法—— a country一個國家 or sometimes a club, company or student union（有時候是社團、公司或學生會） is run by賴以運作的 the top set of rules最高規則。If如果 a court法院 says說 a law一條法律 is unconstitutional違憲，that law那條法律 is dead就等於死了：it breaks它違反了 the highest rule最高規則，so所以 no matter how many people voted for it無論多少人投票通過，it cannot stand它還是站不住腳。This這 is a serious, formal word是一個嚴肅、正式的字，mostly heard主要出現 in news and courtrooms在新聞和法庭裡。

Two things students find surprising. First, it is not the same as 'illegal'. An ordinary crime is illegal — it breaks a normal law. Something unconstitutional breaks the rule ABOVE the laws, and usually it is the government itself being accused, not a person.
