The thick rubber ring that fits around the outside of a wheel on a car, bicycle, bus, or other vehicle. It is filled with air, and it grips the road as the wheel turns.

Generally taken as Middle English tir, a clipping of atir 'equipment' (modern attire); a less accepted theory derives it from tie.
