You can picture one person at the far end of a platform, notebook open, waiting hours for an engine to pass so that a number can go on a list. Both meanings of the word live in that picture: the patient hobby, and the way other people describe someone who cares about a detail nobody else can see the point of.

train + spotter, where spotter is spot ('to see and recognise') plus -er. Longman labels the bird/train etc spotter pattern British English.
