A hobbyist is a person who does a hobby: an activity they enjoy in free time, not as paid work. Photography hobbyists, radio hobbyists, chess hobbyists — they may spend hours on it, and they may be very good at it, but they are not doing it for a wage. The word is a little formal; in speech people often just say someone does it as a hobby. Though actually the line can be soft: some hobbyists sell a little of what they make, and some people who now do it for money started as hobbyists. If it is your job, English usually stops calling you a hobbyist.
