A stickler is a person who thinks some rule or standard really matters, and who expects other people to follow it too. It is a noun, and it almost always appears in one pattern: a stickler FOR something. "She's a stickler for punctuality." "He's a stickler for the rules." You need that "for" phrase — saying only "He's a stickler" sounds unfinished, though people do sometimes say "a real stickler" on its own. The feeling of the word sits in an interesting middle place. It is critical: it hints the person cares more than most people would, and may be a little about small things. But it is not a strong insult, and it can be almost respectful — a stickler for safety is someone you want checking the building. Tone of voice decides. Common partners are: a stickler for detail, for accuracy, for grammar, for tradition, for the rules, for punctuality.
組成From Middle English stightelere, from stickle + -er, meaning one who does the sticking. A stickler was once the person who stood between two fighters at a match and made sure the fight was fair — at Cornish wrestling matches the judges really did carry sticks, as a signal and as a sign of their job. From a judge who enforced the rules of a fight came today's meaning: a person who insists rules be kept.
