    The number 13, which comes after twelve and before fourteen. It is also used on its own to say how old someone is.

    「thirteen」就是數字 13，排在 twelve 後面、fourteen 前面。英文講年紀時常常直接說 I was thirteen，後面的 years old 可以省略，聽起來很自然。要注意它跟 thirty（三十）長得很像，差別聽重音：thirteen 重音在後面（thir-TEEN），thirty 重音在前面（THIR-ty）。thirteen 的組成可以想成「three（三）＋ ten（十）」，fourteen、sixteen 也都是同一個模樣。

You can picture thirteen as the count you reach one step past twelve: ten fingers plus three more. English builds it the way it builds fourteen to nineteen — 'three' plus '-teen' (a form of ten) — so the shape of the word itself says 'three on top of ten'. The same word does double duty for age: 'She's thirteen' needs no extra word for 'years old'.
