the number 14. You use it to count things, to say how long something takes, and also to say how old someone is (he was fourteen = fourteen years old).
fourteen 就是數字 14。英文 13 到 19 都用 -teen 結尾，可以想成「四加十」這樣長出來；four 的 u 在 fourteen 裡留了下來，可是在 forty（40）裡不見了，所以有 fourteen 卻沒有 fourty。最容易出錯的是聽力：fourteen 單獨說時重音在後面、尾音拉長（four-TEEN），放在名詞前面會往前跑（FOUR-teen days），forty 的重音永遠在前面（FOR-ty）。英文講年紀還常常把 years old 省掉（He was fourteen ＝他十四歲）。

From Old English fēowertīene; four + -teen.
源自古英文 fēowertīene，就是 four 加上 -teen。
A plain quantity: four more than ten, written 14. English builds it the way it sounds — four plus -teen (the '-ten' ending shared by thirteen through nineteen). Once you have the number, it does all the ordinary number jobs: counting things, measuring how long something lasts, and saying someone's age.
