Fifteen is first of all just a number — the count you reach after fourteen. Because it is a count, it can measure almost anything: fifteen chairs, fifteen minutes, fifteen miles, fifteen years old. The one place it stops being a bare number is on a rugby field, where 'a fifteen' is the fifteen people who make up one full team, so the count has hardened into the name of the group itself.
