One way to picture 'tape': a long, thin, narrow strip — flat and flexible, like a ribbon you can run between your fingers. From that one shape the word spreads. On the everyday side: a sticky strip that joins things, a plain strip to mark off or tie, the strip stretched across a race finish, the marked strip you measure with. On the recording side: the same thin strip, but coated to hold sound and pictures — magnetic tape, cassettes, videotapes — and so the verb 'to tape' means both to stick something down with that strip and to record onto it.
