Thin, clear plastic tape that is sticky on one side, used for sticking light things such as paper together. The name comes from a brand, but people now use it for any tape of this kind.

Recorded as a genericized trademark: early tape was said to have glue only along the edges, and the nickname 'Scotch' (a thrift stereotype) stuck to the product, then to the whole category.
