    A synonym is a word that means the same, or nearly the same, as another word in the same language: 'big' and 'large', 'begin' and 'start', 'buy' and 'purchase'. The honest truth your dictionary may not stress is that perfect synonyms barely exist. Two words that share a meaning almost always differ in something else — how formal they feel ('buy' at the shop, 'purchase' on a form), how strong they are ('slim' is kind, 'skinny' is not), what they combine with (a 'big mistake' sounds right, a 'large mistake' does not). So a synonym is a word you can often swap in, not always. That is exactly why a can get a student into trouble: it lists words that share a meaning, and says nothing about which one belongs in your sentence. The word is completely everyday in language classrooms. The adjective is 'synonymous', which in ordinary use has stretched past language — 'his name is synonymous with quality' means the two ideas bring each other to mind. The opposite is 'antonym'.

組成From Greek sunonumon: sun- 'with, together' + onoma 'name'. Two words carrying one name between them. Modern English reads it as syn- + -onym.
