A word whose meaning sits opposite another word. Hot is an antonym of cold; in and out; buy and sell. Some pairs are ends of a line (you can be a bit hot); some are either-or (alive or dead, not “a bit alive”). One English word can have different antonyms for different jobs it does: light opposite dark, or light opposite heavy. It is a school and dictionary word, a bit technical, but useful. Its partner is — a word with a near meaning, not an opposite.

組成ant- (“against / opposite”) + -onym (“name”). English took it from French antonyme in the 1800s, built to sit beside synonyme. A book by Charles John Smith in 1867 helped the word settle in English.
