A pseudonym is a name a writer, artist, or performer invents and puts on their work instead of their real name. Book covers, film credits, and some newspaper pieces use one. Some people keep the same pseudonym for years, so readers treat it almost like a real person; others change it. It is a fairly careful, word — in everyday talk people often say “pen name.” Though actually, it is not only for people who write with a pen: singers and painters use pseudonyms too. It is a public working name, not a secret identity for doing something wrong.

組成From French, and before that Greek. The first piece, pseudo-, means “false” or “not the real one.” The second piece, -onym, means “name.” So the word is built as “false name.” English formed the noun from the older adjective pseudonymous.
