From Greek strategos 'general, commander of an army' (stratos 'army, that which is spread out' + agein 'to lead'). It entered English in 1810 as 'the art of a general, the science of war' and only broadened to non-military use by 1887 — so the general-over-the-map picture really is where the word starts.
