From stationer, a book-and-paper dealer who sold from a fixed shop (Medieval Latin stationarius, from Latin statio 'a standing, post, position'), as opposed to a roving peddler; stationery wares (c.1680) meant the goods such a shop sold. Stationary 'not moving' comes from the same statio root, which is why the two words look alike but are not the same word.
stationery 來自 stationer——中世紀有固定店面的書籍與紙張商人（中世紀拉丁文 stationarius，源自拉丁文 statio「站立、崗位、位置」），跟到處走的流動小販相對；stationery wares（約 1680 年）就是這種店賣的貨。學習者常混淆的 stationary（不動的）走的是同一個 statio 字根的另一條路，所以兩個字長得像卻不是同一個字，只有 -ery／-ary 這一個字母的差別。
