1. 1

A paperclip is a small piece of thin wire bent into loops, used to hold a few sheets of paper together without making a hole. You slide it over the corner of the pages; you can take it off and use it again. It is weaker than a stapler: a thick pile will not stay, and it can leave a little mark, but it does not punch the paper. The usual office one is a silver double-loop shape. People also bend them into toys, though that is not what they are for. A staple stays in the page; a clip has a strong metal mouth. A paperclip just pinches lightly.
