Picture a player rising until their hand is above the rim, with the ball held there. The ball is not thrown and it does not arc through the air hoping to drop in. It is pushed straight down through the net from above. Two things come out of that picture at once: it can hardly miss, and everybody in the building sees it happen. Every other use of slam dunk lives on one of those two feelings — near-certainty, or a win too loud to argue with.

可以想成這個畫面：球員一直往上跳，跳到手比籃框還高，球就拿在那裡。球不是被拋出去的，也不用在空中畫弧線、賭它會不會掉進去。它是從上面直接被壓進網子裡。這個畫面同時給出兩種感覺：一是幾乎不可能失手，二是全場都看得見。slam dunk 後來的每一種用法，都是靠著這兩種感覺其中一種長出來的——不是「穩了」，就是「贏得沒話說」。
