The word is generally traced to Canadian French chantier, a lumberjack's headquarters out in the forest: a camp shelter thrown together for as long as the work lasted. That temporary, built-on-the-spot shelter sits right behind the modern meaning. An Irish seantí, 'old house', is sometimes suggested, but lexicologists do not consider it likely.

This shanty is traced to French chantez, the command form of chanter, 'sing!'. It shares its spelling with the hut word by accident; the two came into English by different routes.
