A hymn is a song of praise, almost always sung in a Christian church service. Hymns are usually old, calm, and a bit formal - very different from modern worship songs with guitars and drums. People sing hymns together from a hymn book, often written by poets or church leaders hundreds of years ago. Outside church, you might jokingly hear a very serious, respectful song about a country or a cause called a 'hymn' too.
