You can think of reference as 'turning to point back at something — and using that something as your anchor'. You refer back to a source, a fact, or a person to mention it, to check it, or to lean on it. Every use is some version of 'I'm pointing back to X here': X gets mentioned, X gets consulted, X becomes the standard I measure against, or X is the person/book that vouches for me.
