You can picture reality as the solid ground under your feet, as opposed to the clouds of hope, dream, or imagination floating above it. reality is what is actually there and actually happening — the part of the world that stays true whether or not you like it, wish it away, or pretend otherwise. The word is built on real ('actually existing'): reality is real-ness made into a thing you can point at.
