A pentagon is a flat shape with five straight sides and five corners. If all the sides are the same length, it is a regular pentagon — like a house drawn from above, but with five walls instead of four. In maths class that is the whole story. Though actually, when English speakers say the Pentagon, with a capital P, they almost always mean the huge five-sided building in the United States that houses the Department of Defense, and by extension the US military leadership. Newspapers do this constantly. The building was named after its shape. So the same word is a geometry term and, with a capital letter, a political one.
