A pentagram is a five-pointed star drawn with five straight lines — the kind you can make without lifting the pencil, a star built from a pentagon's diagonals. In geometry it is just that figure. In culture it has long been used as a magic or occult sign: a protective mark in some Western traditions, a ritual symbol in others. In modern films and music an pentagram is often used to suggest , so the word can sound darker than the shape itself. That last use is loud, and students sometimes think every five-pointed star is 'evil'; that is not true. A star on a flag or a Christmas card is usually just a star. When English speakers want this drawn, five-lined figure — especially as a magic sign — they say pentagram.
