Pentameter is a way of measuring a line of poetry: the line has five beats, five 'feet.' In English the famous kind is iambic pentameter — five pairs of a weaker syllable then a stronger one — which is the rhythm Shakespeare often wrote in, the heartbeat of a lot of older English verse. People say a line is in pentameter, or they call that five-beat pattern pentameter itself. You will meet this word in literature class, almost never in the street. Meter here is the poetic measure, not a machine that counts length, and not the metre you use for cloth.
