You can picture someone standing at the receiving end of things: the action comes towards them, and they take it without pushing back. They are in the picture, but as the one things happen to, not as the one making things happen. Everything this word covers sits on that one arrangement — in daily life it describes a person who lets others decide, and in grammar it names the sentence shape that puts the receiver in the front seat.
