oratory

noun

核心畫面

One way to hold this word: a person standing in front of a crowd, and the room slowly going still. Nothing is happening except talking — and yet the talking is doing the work. Oratory names that whole thing: the training that makes it possible, and the pull the words have while they are in the air.

From the word’s history

This side of the word was borrowed from Latin ōrātōria, the feminine form of ōrātōrius ('to do with speaking'), so it began life meaning the craft of the speaker.

這一支是從拉丁文 ōrātōria 借進來的,那是 ōrātōrius(跟演說有關的)的陰性形。所以它一開始指的就是「演說者的那門技藝」,今天的用法一路沒有走遠。

核心畫面

A different picture altogether: a small quiet room with a bench and one window, kept aside so that someone can pray there. Not a big church, not a service with a crowd — just a space that has been set apart for that one purpose.

From the word’s history

This side comes from Late Latin ōrātōrium, through Anglo-Norman and Middle English oratorie, meaning a place for praying. It is a doublet of oratorio, and it took the place of the Old English word bēdhūs.

這一支來自晚期拉丁文 ōrātōrium,經過盎格魯-諾曼語和中古英文的 oratorie 才進到英文,本來就指「禱告的地方」。它和音樂上的 oratorio 是雙生字,也取代了古英文原本的 bēdhūs。
