From Late Latin cappella, literally 'little cloak' — the diminutive of cappa (cloak). The word first named the small shrine built to house the preserved cloak of St Martin of Tours; the room around the relic took the relic's name, and 'little cloak' came to mean 'small side sanctuary'.
