Picture a default pattern that almost everything is made to fit: one common disk size, one common working day, one school version of a language. Non-standard marks whatever sits outside that pattern. Nothing in the word says outside is worse. What it does say is that things built for the pattern may not fit: parts, prices, forms, or, with language, the expectations of a formal setting.
