Not doing things the usual way — different from how most people behave, think, dress, work or live. An unconventional teacher might hold class outside; an unconventional wedding might have no white dress. The key is that the word measures you against what is NORMAL, not against what is right. That is why it is usually a warm or at least neutral word in English, often close to a compliment: it suggests you are free, original, brave enough not to copy everyone. Compare 'weird' or 'strange', which push the person away, or 'eccentric', which is but says ' odd'. 'Unconventional' says 'has their own way'. Careful, though — the warmth depends on the speaker's face and tone. In a job reference, 'an unconventional approach' can be a polite warning that this person does not follow procedure. It is also used quite and technically: unconventional weapons, unconventional warfare, unconventional oil and gas, where it just means 'not of the standard type' with no praise at all.

組成un-（不）+ conventional（傳統的、依照慣例的）。conventional 是 convention（慣例、習俗）+ -al；convention 來自拉丁文 con-（一起）+ venire（來），本義是「大家聚在一起（同意的事）」——這也是為什麼 convention 又有「大會、會議」的意思。
