Think of pointing a finger and finding nothing to point at. Something is there - a statement, a pain - but it does not narrow down to one named thing. Ask which day, which room, which illness, and the answer does not land on one. That is the whole word, and the two uses are the same picture in two rooms: an office notice that names no date, and a test result that names no cause.

Wiktionary records the word as non- plus specific, that is, not pointing to the particular one. The modern uses line up with that: no particular detail named, and no particular cause identified.
