One way to hold this word: a name pinned to a piece of land in the Pacific — two long islands with many smaller ones around them. Once a name is pinned to a place, English lets it slide forward in front of a noun to say 'from there' (New Zealand wool), and it can also travel with what leaves the place: rabbits shipped out of those islands ended up carrying the name themselves.

From the word’s history

The English name is a partial calque of Dutch Nieuw-Zeeland: 'new' was translated, and Zeeland — a Dutch province whose own name is zee 'sea' plus land — was respelled Zealand.

英文名字來自荷蘭文 Nieuw-Zeeland。New 是照意思翻過來的,Zeeland 則是借音改寫成 Zealand。Zeeland 是荷蘭的一個省,名字本身由 zee(海)加 land(陸地)組成。所以這個地名最底層的畫面,其實是「海上的陸地」,前面再加一個「新的」。
