1. 1

Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand. You will hear it in the country itself — in welcome speeches, on the news, and more and more beside the English name, or even in front of it, as in Aotearoa New Zealand. Say it in slow pieces, roughly ah-oh-teh-ah-roh-ah. The Māori word is often explained as "long white cloud," from a story of voyagers seeing a long cloud over the land. Though actually, the name has also been used for the North Island, not only for the whole country, and not every scholar tells the cloud story the same way. What you can stand behind is this: it is a Māori name, now widely used for New Zealand as a whole, and it is not an English nickname invented for tourists. Use it with the respect you would give any people's name for their home.
