A tall rubber boot, waterproof all the way up, that you pull on to keep your feet and legs dry — for rain, mud, gardens, farms, fishing, and music festivals. In Britain it is everyday equipment and everyday vocabulary; children have them in bright colours. The full form is 'wellington boot', but people usually it: 'wellingtons', 'wellies', or just 'boots'. It is a British and Irish word above all — Americans say 'rain boots' or 'rubber boots', Australians say 'gumboots'. It is nearly always plural in real use, because you wear two. The name comes from the Duke of Wellington, the soldier who beat Napoleon: he had his bootmaker cut down the tall riding boot of the day into a closer-fitting leather boot, that style got named after him, and when rubber came along the name moved to the rubber version and stayed. Written with a small w for the boot, a capital W for the Duke and for the city in New Zealand. (Beef Wellington, the dish, is another of the same name.)
