You can think of New World as a name shouted from one side of the ocean. In the 1490s, ships came back from the west with news of land the mapmakers in Europe had not drawn yet, so they wrote it in as the new half of the world. Everything else this phrase does grows out of that line on the map: if a thing comes from that side — a monkey, a crop, a bottle of wine — it is New World; if it comes from the side Europe already knew, it is Old World.
