A country or area that is settled and controlled by people from another, usually more powerful, country - like how parts of the Americas were once colonies of Britain, Spain, or France. In science, 'colony' also describes a group of the same kind of living thing growing or living together, like a colony of ants, bees, or bacteria in a lab dish.
