    A settler is a person who leaves an old home and goes to live in a new land — often a place that still has few people like them, and that sits far from towns and cities. We use this word a lot in history. The settlers who went to North America, Australia, or New Zealand did not just visit; they went to stay, to farm, to build a life. Though actually, the tidy school-book picture (“empty land, brave families”) is tidier than the truth: other people were often already living there. So settler can sound proud in one mouth and quite sharp in another, depending on who is telling the story. In everyday talk you still hear it for people who move to a quiet, far-away place and try to make a home. It is not a tourist, and it is narrower than immigrant: an immigrant may live in a big city; a settler, in this sense, is going out to the edge.
