    NE is the written short form of northeast or northeastern: the direction and the region between north and east. You see it on maps, weather reports, and in place talk (the NE of England; wind from the NE). In some cities, especially in the US, street names also use it (NE 5th Street). You say the two letters. Though actually, the same two letters are also the US postal code for Nebraska, so an address and a weather map are doing different jobs with the same spelling. This is not the old word ne that once meant “not” in English; that is a different word that only looks the same in a book.
