With a capital N, this is not just “somewhere toward the north and east.” It is a name for a region of the United States: the six New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut) plus New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Cities like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia sit in it. Winters can be hard; people talk about snow, old cities, and dense settlement.
