From Latin navis 'ship' (via Old French navie 'fleet') — the same root behind naval and navigate. The word is built straight on 'ship', so its first meaning is a nation's body of warships.

來自拉丁文 navis（船），經古法文 navie（艦隊）進英文，跟 naval、navigate 同一個字根。這個字直接蓋在「船」上，所以它最原本的意思就是一個國家的整批軍艦。
