Indigo is a dark colour between blue and purple — mostly blue, but with a little purple in it. People use it for clothes, paint, ink, and the sky just after the sun goes down. The name comes from a plant dye that used to arrive from India; for a long time that dye was how you made the colour, so the colour and the dye share the name. Old jeans were often this way, which is why that deep blue can look a little purple in the light. In rainbow lists and in art class, indigo sits between blue and violet as its own colour. Though actually, many people looking at a real rainbow cannot pick it out as a separate stripe — it is dark and in-between, and some later writers have quietly left it out. You will still meet it as a normal colour name. It is not a fancy or technical word.
