1. 1n/məˈriːnz/marine corps (usually the US)海軍陸戰隊

The Marines is the marine corps: the part of a country's armed forces whose members are trained to travel by sea and then work on land. In American English it almost always means the United States Marine Corps.

Example

My uncle served in the Marines for six years.

The name comes from the sea, but most of the work happens on shore. That is the whole idea of this part of an army: the ships bring them, and then they land. The word comes with the in front of it and a capital M, because it is the name of one body of people. One person in it is a Marine. When an American speaker says the Marines with no country attached, they mean the United States Marine Corps.

In Britain, the Marines means the Royal Marines: the part of the British navy whose members are trained to land from ships and work on shore.

在英國,the Marines 通常指 the Royal Marines。

The job looks much like the American one, but the place in the system is different. In Britain this force sits inside the navy; in the United States the Marine Corps is its own branch. So when you meet the Marines in a text, it helps to notice where the writer is from. British writing often puts the full name, the Royal Marines, so that nobody has to guess.
