From the word’s history

From Latin navalis 'pertaining to ships', from navis 'ship' (PIE *nau- 'boat'). The root is literally 'ship', which is why naval covers the ship-based branch of a country's armed forces.

源自拉丁文 navalis「與船有關的」，出自 navis「船」（印歐字根 *nau-「船」）。字根本身就是「船」，所以 naval 講的正是軍隊裡以艦船為主的那一支。
