You can picture one thing behind both meanings: a round, flat, dark brown lump, thick and heavy, shaped like a pie. In the yard it is wet earth pressed into shape by a child's hands. On an American menu it is ice cream and chocolate, dark and heavy in the same way. The shape and the colour are what the two share.
