You can think of missus as the title Mrs written down exactly as it sounds in ordinary speech. Once a title is loose from any name, it can be used in two ways. You can throw it at a woman you do not know, the way you would say lady, and you have a way of calling out to her. Or you can use it about the woman of the house, and it becomes a casual name for a wife — the missus.
