From Middle English mirour, from Old French mireor 'looker', from mirer 'to look at', from Latin mīror 'to wonder at'.

Picture the flat glass on the bathroom wall: whatever stands in front of it comes back exactly, at the same moment, without being changed. Two things carry over into the word's other uses — the faithful copy, and the fact that a mirror only ever shows you what is already there.
