核心畫面

You can picture a mess as a scene where things have fallen out of order — toys, papers, dirt scattered around with nothing in its right place, so the eye finds no clean line anywhere. From this one picture of disorder grow the harder meanings: a confused situation, a botched job, a person who has gone to pieces. (One sense — the army room — comes from a different old word and does not belong to this picture.)
