Hold one picture: a road is a hard, flat strip built to travel along, linking one place to another. Everything else is this strip used as a picture. Because a road carries you from here to there, 'on the road' = travelling along it, and the road becomes the way toward a goal ('on the road to recovery'). Because a road is a chosen route, 'go down that road' = pick a course of action, and 'down the road' = further along in time. Even 'one for the road' and 'road to Damascus' lean on the same journey image.

因為路把你從這裡帶到那裡,on the road 就是「在路上趕路」,路也就成了通往目標的途徑(on the road to recovery 走在康復路上)。因為路是一條選定的走法,go down that road 就是「採取某種做法」,down the road 則是「時間上往後一段」。
